What is FibroScan?
FibroScan is a non-invasive medical device used to assess the health of your liver. It helps detect liver stiffness (fibrosis) and fatty liver (steatosis) — conditions that can lead to serious liver diseases if left untreated.
Unlike a liver biopsy, FibroScan is quick, painless, and does not involve needles or surgery.
Who Needs a FibroScan?
You should consider a FibroScan if you:
Have Hepatitis B or C
Are overweight or obese
Have fatty liver (NAFLD/NASH)
Have type 2 diabetes
Drink alcohol regularly
Have abnormal liver blood test results (ALT/AST)
Want to check your liver health as part of a general health check
How Does FibroScan Work?
FibroScan works by using vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE):
A small probe is placed on your right side (over your liver).
The probe sends a gentle vibration and ultrasound waves into your liver.
The device measures how fast the waves travel:
Stiff liver = waves move faster (indicating fibrosis or scarring)
Soft liver = waves move slower
This gives an instant reading of:
Liver stiffness (measured in kPa) → Indicates fibrosis
Fat level (measured as CAP score in dB/m) → Indicates fatty liver
🕒 The test takes only 5–10 minutes, and results are available immediately.
What Do the Results Mean?
FibroScan gives you 2 key values:
1. Liver Stiffness (kPa) – the higher the number, the more fibrosis or scarring.
If this value falls between F3-F4 (Advanced fibrosis to possible cirrhosis):
F0-F1: ≤ 7.3 kPa (normal/mild)
F2: ≥ 7.4 – 9.7 kPa
F2-F3: ≥ 9.8 – 12.4 kPa
F3-F4: ≥ 12.5 – 17.4 kPa
F4: ≥ 17.5 kPa (cirrhosis)
2. UAP Score (dB/m) – tells you how much fat is in your liver.
Interpretation:
Normal: < 244 dB/m
Mild Steatosis: 244–268 dB/m
Moderate: 269–295 dB/m
Severe: ≥ 296 dB/m
If your value = ≥ 296 dB/m
Your UAP value indicates severe liver fat (steatosis).
